Dehiwala National Zoological Garden will be opened at night for the visitors in future. This has initiated on 21st September under the patronage of Minister of Buddhasasana, Sustainable Development and Wildlife Hon. Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, Deputy Minister, Hon. Sumedha G. Jayasena, and State Minister of Finance, Hon. Eran Wickramarathna and other dignitiaries.
Accordingly, the zoo will be opened for public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 7.00 p.m to 10.00 p.m. An area specially reserved for nocturnal animals has been selected for this purpose. Dining facilities, buggy carts will be also provided for the visitors under this scheme. Dehiwala Zoo is the only zoo in South Asia which provide opportunity to watch behavior of nocturnal animals, for the visitors. According to Ms. Dhammika Malsingha, Director General of the Department of National Zoological Gardens, this initiative, which has started according to a concept of Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, is receiving good response from pubic.
Minister has also instructed the officials to fine the visitors who violate the code of ethics on taking photographs, using flash lights, feeding of animals, etc. Minister further said that objective of this program is not to harm animals but to create an atmosphere where human – animal co- existence is strengthened.
